Rally
Coverage of Yesterday's Rally at Israeli Consulate in NYC

Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 7, from 4:30-5:30 PM, hundreds of Chabad Lubavitch Jews from Crown Heights assembled across from the Israeli Consulate on Second Avenue at 42nd Street in NYC. They were joined by a large contingent of dedicated Jews, many from Americans for a Safe Israel/AFSI, carrying Israeli and Jerusalem flags, and chanting, JEWISH LIVES MATTER. The purpose of the rally  was a call to action to Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from Diaspora Jews. Recognizing that the Land of Israel is the inheritance of the Nation of Israel, all Jews have the right to make their voices heard. The message was an attempt to strengthen the resolve to live and settle the Land and to encourage PM Netanyahu and his government not to buckle under the intense international pressures now being orchestrated by the Obama Administration, the EU and the UN.

The organizers of the rally also served as prime speakers. Yisroel Hershkop served as the energetic MC and introduced the line-up. Assemblyman Dov Hikind was the lead speaker, addressing the crowd with his usual fiery and passionate words. He denounced the reign of Arab terror now racing through Israel and called for stricter government controls. Tamar Adelstein of Chabadlife.tv continued with that theme, as did Yossi Rapp, Saadia Hershkop, Jeremy Deri, and AFSI's co-Executive Directors, Judy Kadish and Helen Freedman. Freedman, the last speaker, reminded the crowd that AFSI has been conducting semi-annual trips to the threatened areas of Israel for the past twenty years, and will be going again this Nov. 4-11. Echoing the Israeli strength and determination to establish sovereignty in Judea and Samaria, thus holding onto the biblical heritage,  Freedman asserted that despite the escalating tensions they are proceeding with their travel plans,  and invited others to join them. The rally ended with the enthusiastic singing of Am Yisrael Chai.

Although we realize the situation in Israel is causing some groups and individuals to cancel, AFSI's mission will go on as always, taking proper precautions of course. In 22 years, we have never cancelled a mission.  We never will!  We stand with Israel as part of Am Yisroel.  Am Yisroel Chai!

BETAR, Jabotinsky and the Shtetl
Throughout the 1930s, Jewish political movements in Warsaw set out to transform the hearts and minds of Jewish youth in small towns across Poland. Among these urban activists were the leaders of Betar, the youth movement of Vladimir Jabotinsky's Revisionist party. Armed with longstanding stereotypes about shtetl life, Betar leaders were certain that bringing "modernity" and "progress" to these towns would mobilize their youth for the Zionist cause. Drawing on YIVO's collection of youth autobiographies from the 1930s, and previously unexamined correspondence between Betar's headquarters in Warsaw and its small-town outposts, Daniel Heller (McGill University) reveals the tensions that arose between these urban activists and the young Jews they sought to transform.
