Standing with Israel

Realizing that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would be speaking before the General Assembly at the United Nations on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 1, AFSI could not let the opportunity pass to be present at the UN in support of Israel's Prime Minister.

AFSI Co-Executive Directors Helen Freedman and Judy Freedman Kadish were there, draped in Israeli flags. AFSI's research director Jonathan Grauman carried signs welcoming Bibi and declaring our unity with a whole Israel. We were joined by Jeremy Dery visiting from Israel, Yael Horowitz, and a host of other supporters.

When interviewed by Eliran Abraham from Arutz Sheva, we echoed many of the ideas which we later learned had been spoken by PM Netanyahu in his talk. AFSI has always refused to be silent and has always spoken out in defense of a whole Israel. We joined with the JRRC (Jewish Rapid Response Coalition) this summer in numerous rallies opposing the disastrous Iran deal. PM Netanyahu devoted much of his speech to citing the evils of Iran and the leaderships' never-ending threats to bring about the end of Israel. Just as the Prime Minister pronounced "Am Yisrael Chai", the nation of Israel lives, so our group sang the song outside the UN in defiance of that evil organization that has become the United Arab Nations.

In declaring that "Israel is the front line against barbarism", and that Israel is defending the nations of the world, PM Netanyahu asserted the uniqueness of the Jewish people, almost 4000 years old. Israel will survive. Those who will bless it will also be blessed, and those who will curse it will be cursed. Is there any doubt as to what side a nation should choose?

AFSI mourns the death of an Israeli couple, Rabbi Eitam and Naama Henkin from the community of Neria, murdered by PA terrorists near Itamar last night. They were driving home, slowed down to make a turn, and were brutally attacked. The couple leaves behind six orphaned children. Four of them, aged 4 months, 4, 7 and 9, were in the vehicle but were not hit by the gunfire, according to Magen David Adom. We pray the children will have the strength to overcome the horrific loss of their parents. May they be comforted among the mourners of Zion and may they know no more sorrows.

AFSI also offers sincere condolences to the families of those killed and wounded in the shooting rampage at Umpqua Community College, Roseburg, Oregon.

BETAR, Jabotinsky and the Shtetl
Throughout the 1930s, Jewish political movements in Warsaw set out to transform the hearts and minds of Jewish youth in small towns across Poland. Among these urban activists were the leaders of Betar, the youth movement of Vladimir Jabotinsky's Revisionist party. Armed with longstanding stereotypes about shtetl life, Betar leaders were certain that bringing "modernity" and "progress" to these towns would mobilize their youth for the Zionist cause. Drawing on YIVO's collection of youth autobiographies from the 1930s, and previously unexamined correspondence between Betar's headquarters in Warsaw and its small-town outposts, Daniel Heller (McGill University) reveals the tensions that arose between these urban activists and the young Jews they sought to transform.
