Hamas & the PA/Fatah contesting for control Hamas intimidation in Gaza Yesterday's AFSI email focused on bias in American news media, with New York Post columnist Michael Goodwin bemoaning the passing of objective news reporting and its replacement by biased, opinion-based news, slanted left. Even so, we can still find balanced coverage, even if we have to search harder to find it. Moving to the Middle East, the Arab media in "Palestinian" controlled areas of Gaza and parts of Judea and Samaria typically toe the line when it comes to reporting on their government and leaders (Hamas in Gaza and the Palestinian Authority in Judea and Samaria.) As is the case with authoritarian-led governments, the media serve as a mouthpiece for the government and rarely offer up criticism, unless instructed to do so. With local and municipal elections scheduled for October 8, both Hamas and the PA are nervous about the potential results and are taking "preemptive action" to sway the elections in their favor. They are doing so by intimidating reporters with threats, arrests and confiscations of work tools such as computers. We are not hearing much about this in western media. Internal Arab and Muslim violence does not get major space in the news, as we have seen over the past several years. Burnout from so much violence is one reason, but perhaps another is that as the story simply does not concern Israel or Jews. AFSI Calendar of Events What's Happening to American Journalism? Columnist Michael Goodwin has an insightful piece in today's New York Post titled, American journalism is collapsing before our eyes. In it, he castigates the passing of legitimate, (relatively) non-biased journalism in America and its replacement by overtly opinionated journalism. This is most obviously identified by the partisanship of the mainstream media for Hillary Clinton and the attempt to bury Donald Trump. Here a few passages from his piece: The frenzy to bury Trump is not limited to the Clinton campaign and the Obama White House. They are working hand in hand with what was considered the cream of the nation's news organizations. The shameful display of naked partisanship by the elite media is unlike anything seen in modern America. The largest broadcast networks - CBS, NBC and ABC - and major newspapers like the New York Times and Washington Post have jettisoned all pretense of fair play. Their fierce determination to keep Trump out of the Oval Office has no precedent. Indeed, no foreign enemy, no terror group, no native criminal gang suffers the daily beating that Trump does. The mad mullahs of Iran, who call America the Great Satan and vow to wipe Israel off the map, are treated gently by comparison. Read it all via the link above. Peter Lerner's Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Lt.Col.PeterLerner/videos/1286528828054740/ Today Gaza terrorists launched a rocket at Israel. The rocket hit the town of Sderot where some 19000 people live. Thankfully, despite the attacker's intentions, the rocket failed to wound anybody. In response, the IDF responded and attacked two Hamas positions. At the #Olympics Usain Bolt ran and won the men's 200m in less than 20 seconds. Now think about this: In the communities surrounding Gaza people have less than 15 seconds to reach a shelter and take cover. Please share. In response to the attack, IAF aircraft targeted this evening Hamas positions in the northern Gaza Strip.  Since the beginning of 2016, 14 rockets fired from the Gaza Strip have hit Israel. The IDF remains committed to the stability of the region and will operate in order to bring quiet to the people of southern Israel. When terrorists in Hamas' Gaza Strip, driven by a radical agenda based on hatred, attack people in the middle of the summer vacation, their intentions are clear - to inflict pain, cause fear and to terrorize.
