Arson

Arson in Israel
(The Response? Build, Baby, Build)

The scorched earth policy of the Arabs is
obviously terrorism and should be treated as such.

With the raging fires throughout Israel coming under control, Israeli government officials have put out a number of proclamations about their origin, the battle to control them and the devastation they caused.

To their credit, many officials are not shying away from calling many of the fires what they were - arson - a heinous crime whose intent is simply to destroy.

There are numerous documented cases of Arabs in Israel and throughout the Middle East celebrating Israel "afire", including in Arab media. How pathetic and disgusting, although not entirely unexpected. After all, what did the Arabs in Gaza do after the expulsion of every single Jew from there? They burnt all remaining buildings, including synagogues, and destroyed sophisticated farm and irrigation equipment, solely because it had belonged to Jews.

So much for wanting to better their own lives. Then, and now. No change.

And on another note, with so many Israelis made homeless by the fires, how can the government even contemplate another expulsion - this one of Jews living in the town of Amona, and other towns throughout Judea and Samaria.

Now is the time to build, not destroy and expel. The housing shortage in Israel is acute and has just been made worse. There is plenty of room for development throughout Judea and Samaria. Plans for thousands of apartments have been in the pipeline for approval for years. Now is the time to formally give approval, and build, baby, build.

Left

It Never Ends - Jews Against Israel

Caroline Glick's article a few days ago in the Jerusalem Post should be read by everyone - especially Jews - who support Israel. Here is a brief summary:

- Much of the Arab world is looking forward to the presidency of Donald Trump as a way to help combat and defeat Islamic terrorism in the Middle East.

- However, Muslims in America played key roles in Hillary Clinton's campaign, overwhelmingly voted in favor of her, and are worried about Trump's attitude toward and relationship with the Muslim community.

As Glick thus writes, The gap between the Arab world's support for Trump and the Muslim American community's opposition to him is particularly notable because it reverberates strongly the growing cleavage between the Israeli government and public and large swaths of the American Jewish community. Led most prominently by the Anti-Defamation League and its executive director Jonathan Greenblatt, in the wake of the election, American Jews are at the forefront of efforts to delegitimize Trump and his senior advisers. Unlike their Muslim American counterparts, who are keeping their criticism of Arab regimes to themselves, Greenblatt, the ADL and their allies on the Left have linked their opposition to Trump to legitimizing opponents of Israel.

- Writing about the ADL, Glick states, It has tried to legitimize the BDS campaign to boycott Jewish Israeli products and divest from businesses that do business with Jewish-owned Israeli businesses.

- The ADL has even supported Rep. Keith Ellison's candidacy to serve as the next chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Ellison, a convert to Islam, has a long association with the anti-Semitic Nation of Islam, and has been a proponent of anti-Israel initiatives in the Congress, including a boycott of Israeli Jewish products.

- Given all this, Glick writes, many American Jews have conflated their Judaism with support of leftist, anti-Semitic causes.

- Which gives us all pause to worry.

Benzion
Benzion Shenker, Z"L
Baruch Dayan Emet

AFSI mourns the passing of Benzion Shenker. As AFSI supporter and maestro of Yiddish and Cantorial music, Charlie Bernhaut, writes,

I am most saddened to note the death of Benzion Shenker. He epitomized true Jewish 'SOUL' music - touched the souls of all who heard him through his numerous recordings or who had the pleasure of hearing him in person. He was modest, gentle, and unassuming.  He evoked JOY and brought JOY to his listeners.

When I started my hobby of presenting Jewish Soul Music in 1977, Benzion was part of what I referred to as 'The Big Four' - Shenker, Carlebach, MBD and Fried. Aside from my love of chazzanut, the four touched my soul - each in his unique way. For those who have listened to my programs for almost 40 years, they certainly can testify to the admiration I felt towards Benzion and the pride I had in being his friend.

In 1994, 22 years ago, I had the honor of doing a two-hour interview with Benzion. That program is now available on my website: www.charliebernhaut.com. Simply log on, go to the Archive, and check out the latest Show # 370 of November 28th, 2016. The third hour presents interviews from this past week-end with Chaim Boruch Shenker, Benzion's brother and Velvel Pasternak noted expert of Jewish music. Also included is the complete recording of Benzion's first album from 1956 - Modzitzer Malave Malka. To hear my second two-hour interview with Benzion from five years ago scroll down on the Archive to Show # 125 of November 7, 2011.

We are all blessed to having been touched by this extraordinary talent. Benzion will be sorely missed. No doubt that his music will be appreciated for generations.

The 2016 November AFSI Chizuk Mission Ended Today!

Yesterday (Tuesday), the group included a visit to secular kibbutz Nir Oz, in the western Negev, just 20 miles from Egypt. The kibbutz was founded in 1955 as part of Israel's periphery, away from the densely populated central plain area. It started as a Nahal paramilitary outpost, and a few years later joined the socialist youth movement Hashomer Hatzair.

Mortars and rockets launched from Gaza have landed on the kibbutz, and in 2014 a mortar landed on the kibbutz kindergarten as part of a barrage of at least a dozen mortars. No children were wounded or killed, but one adult was wounded shepherding the children to safety. At least one tunnel was also found to have been dug from Gaza with an exit near the kibbutz. With security always an issue, the group met with a Rav Shatz, or security chief at the kibbutz, who briefed them on the serious security issues in that area.

In Gvar'am, another secular kibbutz, the AFSI mission donated and installed mezuzot in five different homes. Rabbi Shlomo Raanan assisted in this effort. Rabbi Raanan established "Ayelet Hashachar" in 1997, a nonprofit organization that works towards creating a united society of religious and non-religious Jews in Israel.

Located on the road between Ashkelon and Yad Mordechai, this kibbutz has also been targeted by Hamas rockets for many years.

The group spent Wednesday, the last day of the mission, with the former Gush Katif communities. They visited the new community of Nitzan, and paid a visit to the Gush Katif Heritage Center, the Ulpana (girls boarding school), and the community of Be'er Ganim, where the association for resettling the Nitzanim area is headquartered.

Here are a few pictures of resident Shai Yemeni showing the Chizuk group his greenhouse. Here, he raises Glatt kosher vegetables - no bugs! Shai is one of the few people who has returned to agriculture after the expulsion from Gush Katif in 2005. He is in business with his father.

Here is the beautiful view from Be'er Ganim, looking north:

The picture below is of the incredible King David mosaic by the entrance of the Gush Katif Heritage Center.

Lunch was at the Ulpana (girls boarding school), where a former teacher spoke to the group about the life changing effects that the expulsion from Gaza had on the soldiers. She had been an officer, and stated that no one she knows who took part in the expulsion was unscathed. Dror Vanunu, good friend of AFSI for many years, joined them for lunch. Dror headed up up the international effort to stop the Disengagement in 2005. He now lives in Nitzan with his family.

After lunch the group toured around the Lachish region. In ancient times, this area was "the Tel Aviv of Israel".

The Bar Kokhba rebellion occurred in Judea, including the Lachish region. Around here, caves where members of the rebellion hid have been discovered during modern building construction. There are plans to build up the Lachish region for Gush Katif expellees and others.
