Saturday
This past Saturday night in Tel Aviv

Dispatch from Israel - Helen Freedman, Executive Director, AFSI

This past Saturday night, Oct. 31, while Americans were busy with Halloween and Mets fans were bedecked in orange, rooting for their team, Rabin Square in Tel-Aviv was filled with throngs of people gathered to remember former General, Ambassador, and two-time Israeli Prime Minister, Yitzchak Rabin. Charlie Bernhaut, Judy Kadish and attended the event and observed the thousands who gathered at the Square. We saw huge green Meretz balloons, along with cascades of white balloons. These carried a message in Hebrew from Peace Now stating that Rabin understood the two state "solution". Former President Bill Clinton also attended. The mood was quiet and respectful, but the crowd was made up primarily of young people, many who were born after Rabin's death. Some were carrying Peace Now signs. I wondered if they understood what they meant.

Friday's Jerusalem Post Magazine section carried a hate-filled article by Avraham Avi-Hai, who, we are told, "knew Yitzchak Rabin through his work for Prime Minister Levi Eshkol, and later in his role as chairman of the United Israel Appeal."

Helen Freedman wrote the following letter to the Jerusalem Post decrying the article:

The Jerusalem Post Magazine
Dear Editor,

Your October 30, 2015 magazine articles dedicated to remembering Yitzchak Rabin included the biased and vitriolic article by Avraham Avi-Hai entitled "The twice-murdered national icon, 1922-1995." The article speaks about Rabin's opponents in the most hate-filled way. Avi-Hai writes about "a frenzy of hatred and vituperation" led by "extremist rabbis and settlers," which provided "a sanction to murder." His concluding paragraph condemns the "murderer's pack whose "technique is to fan the flame of Arab hatred by uprooting their trees, burning their crops and finally burning people, to incite them to kill Jews..."

How outrageous that Avi-Hai, a former chairman of the United Israel Appeal, should blame Jews for the reign of terror now being conducted by Arab terrorists throughout Israel. Is he unaware of the indoctrination that begins at the earliest levels of education with Arab children teaching them to hate Jews and to martyr themselves by killing as many Jews as possible? How dare he accuse Jews of "burning people?" Despite all the efforts of those who delight in finding "price-tag" actions, absolutely NO evidence was found to justify the accusations of "burning people." It is people like Avi-Hai who are fanning the flames of Jews against Jews. May he be met with shame and humiliation for his outrageous words. And the Post would do its readers a big favor by refusing to print such hate-filled material.

BETAR, Jabotinsky and the Shtetl
Throughout the 1930s, Jewish political movements in Warsaw set out to transform the hearts and minds of Jewish youth in small towns across Poland. Among these urban activists were the leaders of Betar, the youth movement of Vladimir Jabotinsky's Revisionist party. Armed with longstanding stereotypes about shtetl life, Betar leaders were certain that bringing "modernity" and "progress" to these towns would mobilize their youth for the Zionist cause. Drawing on YIVO's collection of youth autobiographies from the 1930s, and previously unexamined correspondence between Betar's headquarters in Warsaw and its small-town outposts, Daniel Heller (McGill University) reveals the tensions that arose between these urban activists and the young Jews they sought to transform.
