AFSI Chizuk Mission, Day 2 (See AFSI's website afsi.org for the complete itinerary.) At the end of a long first day on Wednesday, Chaim Silberstein, head of Keep Jerusalem, gave an inspiring talk on the need for Jerusalem to remain undivided. | Chaim Silberstein, head of Keep Jerusalem |
Early morning Thursday, the group went to the Kotel and ascended the Temple Mount, led by Yitzchak Reuven, an assistant to Rabbi Richman, of the Temple Mount Institute.
Following that early morning excursion, they met with Jerusalem Councilman Arieh King, head of the Israel Land Fund. They traveled with him around eastern Jerusalem, learning about the unique issues with which he deals on a daily basis.
Arieh led the group into the Nachalat Yitzhak neighborhood in Jerusalem to see a Jewish home attacked by Arabs throwing Molotov cocktails. | Jerusalem Councilman Arieh King |
Also in Jerusalem, Aviad Shinuell, a resident of the Old City, representing Ateret Cohanim, spoke to the AFSI group in the Ohel Yitzhak synagogue in the Old City of Jerusalem. | Aviad Shinuell, Ateret Cohanim Representative | Through the efforts of Elad Asulin, Director of development, Panim El Panim, the group visited IDF Unit 636 at their base outside of Jerusalem. There, they had face to face meetings with the soldiers, and they brought with them items that the soldiers can use and which one of AFSI's members has donated for the purpose. AFSI also made a generous donation to the Unit and enjoyed a BBQ dinner with the chayalim. In the evening back at their hotel, they met with Shalom Pollak, a representative from Honenu, the national legal defense organization, led by Shmuel (Zangi) Meidad. As Arab terrorism increases, Jews are required to take self-defense measures more and more frequently. Often, criminal cases are brought against them as Arabs claim injury. Honenu attorneys are constantly challenged to defend against these charges and have the cases closed.

Monday, November 23, 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM BETAR, Jabotinsky and the Shtetl Throughout the 1930s, Jewish political movements in Warsaw set out to transform the hearts and minds of Jewish youth in small towns across Poland. Among these urban activists were the leaders of Betar, the youth movement of Vladimir Jabotinsky's Revisionist party. Armed with longstanding stereotypes about shtetl life, Betar leaders were certain that bringing "modernity" and "progress" to these towns would mobilize their youth for the Zionist cause. Drawing on YIVO's collection of youth autobiographies from the 1930s, and previously unexamined correspondence between Betar's headquarters in Warsaw and its small-town outposts, Daniel Heller (McGill University) reveals the tensions that arose between these urban activists and the young Jews they sought to transform.
