Mission
Chizuk Mission, Day 3

Today the AFSI Chizuk Mission left Jerusalem to join Nadia Matar and Yehudit Katzover of Women in Green (WIG) at Oz V'Gaon, the park that was created in Gush Etzion in memory of Gilad, Naftali, and Eyal.

Continuing south, they arrived at Yeshivat Nir in Kiryat Arba/Hebron, which traditionally serves as the group's "hotel" for Shabbat. They met with David Wilder, good friend and guide extraordinaire. He drove with them up to Tel Rumeida before Shabbat and pointed out the remarkable archaeological findings there.

Shabbat services were available in the Yeshiva or at the Ma'arat HaMachpela in Hebron, a short walk away.

Shabbat morning prayers are either at the Ma'arat HaMachpela in Hebron, or at the Yeshiva. Lunch is once again planned at the Gutnick Center, followed by touring around Hebron.

Motzei Shabbat, the group will be driving south to Eilat for a well-deserved rest.

Ethical
Last night's rally at
the Ethical Cultural Society of Westchester

Members of AFSI, Israelis for Israel, and the Jewish Rapid Response Coalition (JRRC) converged last night in White Plains at the Ethical Culture Society to refute anti-American and anti-Israel propaganda cloaked as a program on "Islamophobia." The format of the event on "free-speech" only permitted one point of view. Panelist Bina Ahmad, who has described Israel as an Apartheid state, purported that Islamic terrorism does not exist and is a concoction of certain men to serve their self-interests at the expense of Muslims.

Here is a news report of the event:

Paul Ferbank, rally organizer for JRRC, reported the following:

Unfortunately, the meeting only lasted for 1-hour and 28-minutes. The moderators of the Ethical Culture (EC) Society had asked attendees to write their questions down on cards. At 8:28 with 32-minutes left in the program, the EC ended the program and would not allow panelists to answer questions. So much for free speech at the EC.

BETAR, Jabotinsky and the Shtetl
Throughout the 1930s, Jewish political movements in Warsaw set out to transform the hearts and minds of Jewish youth in small towns across Poland. Among these urban activists were the leaders of Betar, the youth movement of Vladimir Jabotinsky's Revisionist party. Armed with longstanding stereotypes about shtetl life, Betar leaders were certain that bringing "modernity" and "progress" to these towns would mobilize their youth for the Zionist cause. Drawing on YIVO's collection of youth autobiographies from the 1930s, and previously unexamined correspondence between Betar's headquarters in Warsaw and its small-town outposts, Daniel Heller (McGill University) reveals the tensions that arose between these urban activists and the young Jews they sought to transform.
