AFSI Calendar of Events Shimon Peres, z"l Shimon Peres, 1923 - 2016 Americans For a Safe Israel marks with sadness the passing today of Shimon Peres, former Prime Minister and President of the State of Israel. Shimon Peres had a remarkable life and career: - Elected to the Knesset in 1959 - Served twice as the Prime Minister of Israel - Served twice as the Interim Prime Minister - Served in 12 different cabinets as a Member of Knesset - Became the ninth President of Israel in 2007 and served in this role until his retirement in 2014 - Was the world's oldest head of state - Considered the last link to Israel's founding generation Shimon Peres was known for many things: a warrior, a statesman, and a man searching for peace. Shimon Peres was known for saying, As a bird cannot fly with one wing, as a man cannot applaud with one hand, so a country cannot make peace just with one side, with itself. For peace, we need the two of us.  May his memory be for a blessing and may his family and the entire House of Israel be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem. Back to Top Senate Overrides Obama's Veto (first time!) Today's Wall Street Journal reports that the Senate overrode Obama's veto of a bill that would allow terror victims to sue foreign governments. Senate Overrides Obama's Veto of Bill Allowing Terror Victims to Sue Foreign Governments The Senate voted Wednesday to override President Barack Obama's veto of legislation that would allow Americans to sue foreign governments over terrorist attacks, the first time the chamber has delivered such a rebuke to the president since he took office. In a 97-1 vote, the Senate moved to overturn Mr. Obama's Friday veto of the bill, which would permit survivors or surviving relatives of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks to sue countries they believe played a role in it. The families have long sought the right to sue Saudi Arabia for any alleged role in the attacks, which the kingdom has denied. The bill "will send a strong message to those who sponsor terrorist attacks on American soil, including foreign governments, will answer to those victims and pay for the death and destruction that they cause," Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, the No. 2 Senate Republican, said. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) was the only senator to vote to sustain the veto. It is now up to the House of Representatives to vote. If they vote to override, the bill becomes law. The bill gives families of victims of the 9/11 terror attacks the right to sue in U.S. court for any role that elements of the Saudi government may have played in the attacks. Although there is some concern that the passage of this bill may make it easier for Americans to be subjects of lawsuits in foreign courts, the bill finally enables those hurt by the 9/11 terror to reach a semblance of justice.
