Amona: Much More Than Just A "Settlement"

Caroline Glick has a must-read piece in the Jerusalem Post about Amona, the Regulations Bill now making its way through the Knesset, and Israel's international standing. As she explains:

Israel's coalition crisis over the settlements regulation bill is not a normal power struggle between overweening politicians. It is not popularity contest between Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon and his Kulanu Party and Education Minister Naftali Bennett and his Bayit Yehudi Party.

It is also not about contenders for the helm challenging Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's political primacy.

The settlement regulation bill proposes to extend the authority of the Military Government in Judea and Samaria to seize privately owned land. That authority is now limited to seizure for military purposes. The bill would allow the Military Government to seize land for the purpose of private construction as well.

The political fight over the bill is not merely a fight over the community of Amona, which will be destroyed by order of the High Court if the law isn't passed before December 25.

The fight over the law is a fight about the character of Israel.

Opponents of the bill argue that the law undermines the power of the Supreme Court and endangers Israel's international standing. Proponents of the bill argue that Israel needs to ensure the primacy of the Knesset. They further argue that there is no point in bowing to the will of an international community that is constitutionally incapable of ever standing with Israel.

Senate Votes 99-to-0 to Extend Iran Sanctions Act
for 10 More Years: Please Thank Mark Kirk

Senator Mark Kirk (R-IL), did not win his bid for reelection last month. A real pity, as he is a man of moral stature, has a realistic view of our world, understands friends from foes, and is a supporter of Israel.

Senator Kirk has been a leading opponent of the nuclear deal between the US and the west with Iran, frequently challenging the Obama administration on this critical issue.

Yesterday, he issued a statement after the Senate voted 99-to-0 to pass the Iran Sanctions Extension Act (H.R. 6297), a bill that would extend the expiring Iran Sanctions Act of 1996 (Public Law 104-172) for another ten years. In July 2015, Senators Kirk and Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) introduced the original Senate version of the bill known as the Iran Sanctions Relief Oversight Act of 2015 (S. 1682).

The statement reads,
"President Obama should immediately sign into law the Iran Sanctions Extension Act.  Since the fatally-flawed nuclear deal, the outgoing Administration has done so appallingly little to push back against the growing dangers of Iran's terrorism financing, missile proliferation, support for the Assad regime, and human rights abuses. Renewal of the expiring Iran Sanctions Act of 1996 is an important first step in strengthening the safety and security of the United States and our allies, including Israel, against Iran's grave threats."

Adam Kredo's article in the Washington Free Beacon explains in detail the battle to get the bill passed, given Obama's extreme opposition to it:
Congress Passes New Iran Sanctions, Ignoring Obama Admin Threats

Please thank Senator Kirk for leading the effort to get this bill passed. He can be contacted here: Senator Mark Kirk.

AFSI has worked hard these past two years, leading and coordinating grassroots efforts to protest the Iran nuclear deal. From demonstrations on the streets of Manhattan that drew thousands of people, to posting articles about the deal in this space, to initiating letter writing campaigns against it, we thank all of those who demanded their voices be heard in opposition to it. We also thank our elected officials who fought against the deal. The dust has not yet settled, and we continue to make our voices heard loud and clear.

ZAKA
ZAKA Pays Tribute To Danny Danon, Rabbi A. Schneier & Amb. Power

Yesterday, ZAKA / Search and Rescue held an event at Park East Synagogue on Manhattan's Upper East Side honoring Rabbi Arthur Schneier, Ambassador Samantha Power, U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, and Ambassador Danny Danon, Israel Permanent Representative to the United Nations. Outgoing Secretary General Ban Ki Moon was also present.  Ambassadors Danon and Power were honored for their work in getting having the United Nations Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations grant official observer status to Zaka and having Zaka recognized as an NGO at the UN.  The status and recognition had been denied previously solely due to
Anti-Israel bias.

Founded in 1989 in Israel, ZAKA was originally formed to respond to terror attacks and deal with the retrieval, identification and burial of the deceased. ZAKA provides search and rescue, autopsy prevention, medical response and mortuary services. Today, it is Israel's primary rescue and recovery volunteer organization, with thousands of volunteers  on call 24/7 to respond to any terror attack, accident or disaster.

ZAKA volunteers also work in specialist search and rescue units on land and sea. The UN recently recognized the ZAKA International Rescue Unit, which operates with other Israeli units at mass casualty incidents around the world.
