Thursday - October 11, 2018 First Zionist Library Inaugurated in Gush Etzion It's Why We're Excited! At the Oz v'Gaon nature reserve in Gush Etzion a unique library comprising writings and books on Zionism and its founders was dedicated on Tuesday. AFSI applauds the continuing philanthropic work of our Board member Cherna Moskowitz, who made this library possible. Established through an initiative of Women in Green, the library includes books and writings dealing with Zionism, its philosophers, and those who implemented it, spanning more than a hundred years. Among the speakers were former Jewish Agency head and former Minister Natan Sharansky, World Zionist Organization acting head Yaakov Hagoel, and Gush Etzion Council head Shlomo Ne'eman. Oz v'Gaon is a place very close to AFSI's heart. We've contributed and supported it from the start and take pride in watching it grow and flourish. Read about the inauguration of the library HERE. Thank You Ambassador Haley Israel and the Jewish people were shaken to the core earlier this week when US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley announced her resignation, effective January 2019. In a press conference with President Trump she stated it was time for her to step down. Sh stated that she looked at her accomplishments over the last two years with pride. During her tenure as UN ambassador, Haley proved to be a moral compass that was sorely needed. She has been the staunchest ally and best friend Israel has ever had at the UN and filling the void she leaves is a huge undertaking. We look forward to hearing about Haley's replacement in the coming months and trust that President Trump will find someone equally as qualified. More, More, More...Keep Building Amichai residents, previously evacuated from Amona, are now responding to a ruling that is in their favor. Israel's Supreme Court has rejected the petitions that were filed against their new town. "Now it's final - the community of Amichai has been established, and nothing will prevent us from developing and flourishing and bringing blessing to all the residents of the Shiloh Valley and the entire region." AFSI was in Amona before it was destroyed. Our officers were present in August to see the beautiful new playground (photo above), which was anonymously donated by an AFSI member. We were proud to be there for the opening ceremony. Danon Fights Back "The United Nations has not spoken out against the cruel murder, but we will continue to remember and remind the world," said Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon. Israel is fighting back at the United Nations over its failure to condemn the Barkan terror attack, which killed two Jewish lives. Danon placed a photo of the two victims with memorial candles at United Nations headquarters. Denial of Recommendation Letter Brings Disciplinary Action to Professor In our September 20 newsletter we reported that University of Michigan (UM) Associate Professor John Cheney-Lippold (pictured here) denied a student's request for a letter of recommendation for a study abroad program in Israel. Cheney-Lippold now faces disciplinary action from the college. Elizabeth Cole, interim dean of the College of Literature, Science and the Arts, stated to him, "You used the student's request as a platform to express your own personal views. Interfering with a student's academic aspirations, as you have done here, is not acceptable." This development comes as UM teaching assistant Lucy Peterson was identified as second instructor to deny a letter of recommendation for a student applying for a study abroad program in Israel. Full Name: Jerusalem For the first time ever, a 2,000-year-old stone inscription with the full name of Jerusalem was exposed in the area of the Jerusalem International Convention Center (Binyanei Ha'Uma).  Dr. Yuval Baruch, Jerusalem Regional Archaeologist of the Israel Antiquities Authority, and Prof. Ronny Reich of Haifa University, who read and studied the inscription, noted that "First and Second Temple period inscriptions mentioning Jerusalem are quite rare. This editorial was printed in the New Jersey News, October 4, 2018 THE DEATH OF OSLO The title of your editorial, 25 Years After Oslo, Stabbed in the Back, along with your conclusion that "we mourn the death of hopefulness," after 25 failed years, simply illustrates how naive and foolish people were who believed that Oslo could succeed. It was born out of the brainstorm of a few unelected, unofficial individuals who, like John Kerry today who is negotiating illegally with Iran, chose to bring "peace" between the terrorist Arafat and Israel. Yes, Shimon Peres pushed it along, and Yitzchak Rabin seemed to reluctantly go along with it, but it was probably his disillusionment with the Accord that led to his assassination. Those who were willing to say that the "emperor has no clothes" knew that the very same day that Arafat signed the September 1993 Accord on the White House lawn, that he spoke to his people in Arabic that night and told them that there was no need to keep any treaty with "infidels" and he had no intention of adhering to it. The terrorism that broke out, the blown-up pizzerias in Jerusalem, the bus bombings in Tel Aviv, the rampant homicide bombers, and the knifings, such as the horrific one that tragically took the life of Ari Fuld, a Lion of Zion, all claimed hundreds of innocent Israeli lives. Despite it all, one American president after another maintained loyalty to the "two-state solution." The realists called it the dissolution of Israel. But the "peace-makers" plodded on. Finally, we are fortunate in having President Trump tackling the problem. He, and his emissaries, Jason Greenblatt and Jared Kushner, are able to look with clarity at the issues and see the PA/PLO/Hamas/Hezbollah for what they are - unrepentant terrorists who are willing to sacrifice the welfare of their own people in order to destroy Israel. I believe we are in an era of hopefulness. Once all the pretenses and posturings are put away, and reality is allowed to sink in, perhaps there will be the possibility of some sensible detente. I am hopeful.
