What an educational and fun evening spent in the company of good friends and like minded passionate activists for Israel!

Thank you Janet Young for being the inspiration behind this meeting in honor of Rabbi Avi Schwartz's visit to the States. 

The meeting began with Rabbi Raanan Isseroff reading Chapter 24 of Psalms as per the request of Evelyn Haies in tribute to RCRF's next Dinner (we just had the 23rd) commemorating Yahrzeit of Rachel Imeinu in 2018.  Never to early to plan!

As he was reading the Tehillim I reflected how our group embodies and strives for being among those destined to ascend Har HaBayit and prayed that these words actualize speedily in our day!

3Who will ascend upon the Lord's mount and who will stand in His Holy place?גמִי־יַֽ֖עֲלֶה בְּהַ֣ר יְהֹוָ֑ה וּמִי־יָ֜ק֗וּם בִּמְק֥וֹם קָדְשֽׁוֹ:
4He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not taken My name in vain and has not sworn deceitfully.דנְקִ֥י כַפַּ֗יִם וּבַ֪ר לֵ֫בָ֥ב אֲשֶׁ֚ר לֹֽא־נָשָׂ֣א לַשָּׁ֣וְא נַפְשִׁ֑י (כתיב נַפְשִׁו) וְלֹ֖א נִשְׁבַּ֣ע לְמִרְמָֽה:

Tamar Adelstein, Director of Women for the Itegrity and Security of Israel began her remarks by  bringing up the Balfour Declaration.  In that Declaration, the Nations of the World acknowledged that Israel was the homeland of the Jewish People. She noted that Israel was not granted the Land by this Declaration. It was Given to the Jewish people by G-d. However, the Declaration acknowledged Israel's rights to the Land of Israel by the Nations of the World.  In connection to this, Tamar mentioned the  Medrash of the 3 Oaths found in the Talmud.

Two of the oaths pertain to the Jewish people, and one of the oaths pertains to the other nations of the world. The Jews for their part were sworn not to forcefully reclaim the Land of Israel and not to rebel against the other nations, and the other nations in their turn were sworn not to subjugate the Jews excessively.

In connection to the 3 Oaths, the Balfour Declaration is proof that the Jews did not forcefully reclaim the Land of Israel.  Tamar then spoke about the Parsha of the week, Parshath Chayei Sarah and the purchase of Avraham Avinu of Maarat HaMachpela. She described how Efron repeatedly offered to give the Land away to Avraham.   Yet Avraham understood his real intentions and insisted on buying the Land. The Lubavitcher Rebbe said that since this is the first piece of Land owned by the Jewish People it was important to strip it completely of its previous owner and therefore was bought for an exorbitant sum of money so that now the Land will be recognized first and foremost by its new Honorable owner rather than by its previous owner.

Larry gave us a historical overview of the Balfour Declaration.  It all started in the 1880s when French military intelligence accused a Jewish Officer Alfred Dreyfus of spying for the Germans https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_Dreyfus and he was accused of treason.  There was a public show trial that went on for years where they broke his sward and sent him to Devil's Island.  

An assimilated Journalist for a Viennese Paper, by the name of Theodor Herzl covered the Dreyfus. 

...As the Paris correspondent for Neue Freie Presse, Herzl followed the Dreyfus affair, a political scandal that divided the Third French Republic from 1894 until its resolution in 1906. It was a notorious antisemitic incident in France in which a Jewish French army captain was falsely convicted of spying for Germany. Herzl was witness to mass rallies in Paris following the Dreyfus trial. There has been some controversy surrounding the impact that this event had on Herzl and his conversion to Zionism. Herzl himself stated that the Dreyfus case turned him into a Zionist and that he was particularly affected by chants of "Death to the Jews!" from the crowds. 

... Beginning in late 1895, Herzl wrote Der Judenstaat (The State of the Jews), which was published February 1896 to immediate acclaim and controversy. The book argued that the Jewish people should leave Europe if they wished to, either for Argentina or, preferably, for Palestine, their historic homeland. The Jews possessed a nationality; all they were missing was a nation and a state of their own.[22] Only through a Jewish state could they avoid antisemitism, express their culture freely and practice their religion without hindrance.[22] Herzl's ideas spread rapidly throughout the Jewish world and attracted international attention.[23] Supporters of existing Zionist movements, such as the Hovevei Zion, immediately allied themselves with him, but establishment Jewry vilified him and considered his ideas as a threat to their attempts at integration and a rebellion against God.

 In 1897, at considerable personal expense, he founded Die Welt of Vienna, Austria-Hungary, and planned the First Zionist Congress in Basel, Switzerland. He was elected president (a position he held until his death in 1904), and in 1898 he began a series of diplomatic initiatives to build support for a Jewish country. 

The Balfour Declaration was a public statement issued by the British government during World War I announcing support for the establishment of a "national home for the Jewish people" in Palestine, then an Ottoman region with a minority Jewish population. It read:
His Majesty's government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavours to facilitate the achievement of this object, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country.
The declaration was contained in a letter dated 2 November 1917 from the United Kingdom's Foreign SecretaryArthur Balfour to Lord Rothschild, a leader of the British Jewish community, for transmission to the Zionist Federation of Great Britain and Ireland. The text of the declaration was published in the press on 9 November 1917.

Larry summed up: Jews this past century have not taken advantage of the opportunity to move to Israel.  
It started with Jabotinsky. Jews didn't leave Israel. In 1940's there was a bill to bring 20,000 children to America but Roosevelt didn't push it. Today, there are thousands of Jews who choose Germany over Israel.

He showed that the Holocaust did not play a significant roll in the establishment of the State of Israel as many believed.

  3. Aliya Aleph Petach Tikva, Zichron Yaakov
Evelyn Haies mentioned the purchase of Kever Rochel by Sir Moses Montifiore in 1827 http://rachelstomb.gov.il/page.aspx?itemid=montifiore  Talking about Jewish Setllement in the Land of Israel, The RCRF Museum at Kever Rochel  had The Wall of Settlements which details Gaza since the time of David HaMelech, since the chief rabbi of Gaza, Yisrael ben Moshe of Najara wrote Kol Ribon that we still sing 300 years later on Friday nights.  The Druze of Pekiin protected the Jews during invasions from the north and they still protect us today.  Other presentations included are on First Settlement, Degania,  Petah Tikva. The Wall of the Tsaddikim and their role in pre-State Israel includes information on the Montefiores, Rav Alkali, Kalishers, Rav Aryeh Levin, Rav Kook, Rav Shlomo Goren.

President Truman's Decision to Recognize Israel
 At midnight on May 14, 1948 – 6 p.m. in Washington – the British would relinquish control of Palestine, which they had been administering since World War I under mandate from the League of Nations. One minute later, the Jewish Agency, under the leadership of David Ben­-Gurion, would proclaim the new state. (The name "Israel" was as yet unknown, and most of us assumed the new nation would be called "Ju­daea.") The neighboring Arabs made it clear that the fighting, which had already begun, would erupt into a full-scale war against the new state the moment the British left. In order to avoid this, the British and the State Department wanted to turn Palestine over to the trusteeship of the United Nations. 
It was the courageous decision of President Truman with the counsel of Clark M. Clifford who served as Special Counsel to President Truman at the time  to recognize  the new state so quickly in light of serious opposition from the  Secretary of State, General of the Army George C. Marshall.  That has won Truman an immor­tal place in Jewish history..

England left Israel for it's own interest. According to Rabbi Schwartz, England was bankrupt after WWII. it could not sustain the Commonwealth. It left Jordan in 1946. It left India in 1947. It left Israel in 1948. It would have left Israel no matter what. England was not nice to both Jews and Arabs alike. 
Tamar Adelstein then commented in support of what Rabbi Avi Schwartz was saying and quoted from the Sefer הקריאה והקדושה of the previous Rebbe who said that the establishment of the State of Israel was a political moment. 
Joan Peter's book on Israeli demographics called From Time In Memorial came up in discussion.  Many Jews forced to leave Arab countries came to Israel while many Arabs left Israel in the 1948 War of Independence.

Update on Martef HaShoah  - almost forgotten Chamber of the Holocaust now undergoing renovation

Rabbi Avi Schwartz gave the group a first hand update of Martef Hashoah, the first Holocaust museum in Eretz Yisroel situated on Har Zion in the Old City of Jerusalem.  Har Zion was liberated by Avi's father in 1948.  In 1948 Simon Wiesenthal went back to Austria and collected ashes from 22 Concentration camps.  There was a 3 day funeral where the casters came from tel Aviv to Har Tzion. .  This is the only place where Holocaust survivors and their descendents can visit. Tombstones of communities wiped out. This museum is now undergoing a renovation under a leading historian of the Holocaust  Dr. Fonzi and Rabbi Schwartz are making into their mission to revive it.  On October 2017 Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu called it a "graveyard of ashes without bodies".
