Day2
The Chizuk Mission Continues: Day 2

Friday morning the group visited dear friends of AFSI, Nadia Matar and Yehudit Katzover from Women in Green, at Givat Oz V'Gaon. In 2014, this site in Gush Etzion was reclaimed by WIG and converted into a park and vibrant tourist site. Previously, the site was known as Givat Oz (Hill of Strength). The new name incorporates the initials of the three boys who were kidnapped and murdered - Gilad Shaer, Eyal Yifrach and Naftali Frankel - and the acronym created also means great wisdom.

During the Spring 2016 Chizuk Mission, AFSI became a proud partner in the park with its own special corner. Members of the trip were so moved by the Oz v'Gaon mission and progress made, that several of them decided to fund a new walkway into the park, called AFSI Way. AFSI is proud to have contributed to the development of Oz V'Gaon!

The group then continued to Efrat to meet with Rabbi David Marcus of the One Israel Fund Efrat Medical Facility there. The EMC serves as the primary urgent care and general medical center for the entire Gush-Hevron region, providing care to nearly 60,000 residents.

Rabbi Marcus is the Executive Director of the EMC. An alumnus of Yeshiva University, he has earned various graduate degrees in the fields of education and psychology, and is the Senior Development Officer of One Israel Fund. He spearheaded development for the Efrat Medical Center and is currently working to develop similar medical centers in the Shomron region as well as the Binyamin region.

They then visited the ALEH Therapeutic Pool in Jerusalem. ALEH is Israel's largest network of care for children with severe multiple disabilities, and has branches in Jerusalem, Bnei Brak, Gedera and the Negev.

Finally, the group returned to their hotel to prepare for Shabbat, and a discussion with Ken Abramowitz, President of American Friends of Likud and Founder of Savethewest.com.

Shabbat Shalom from AFSI in Israel!

Leonard
Leonard Cohen, Dead at 82

Leonard Cohen, famous song writer, poet and singer from Canada, passed away yesterday at the age of 82. He was a lover of Israel, and is known for visiting the troops and providing chizuk during the 1973 Yom Kippur War.

Here is a little-viewed video of Leonard Cohen visiting the troops in the Sinai:

The following is reprinted from the Jerusalem Post:

Israeli politicians joined the world in mourning Jewish singer and songwriter Leonard Cohen, who died late Thursday night.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shared his thoughts on Twitter speaking of Cohen's love of Israel.

"I'll never forget how he arrived to sing to soldiers during the Yom Kippur War, out of a sense of solidarity," Netanyahu tweeted.

Though the prime minister had originally finished his army service in 1972, Netanyahu served in the Yom Kippur War.

"This morning we looked at each other and we each had the same thought. Dance me to the end of love was the sound track to many moments in our lives, as a couple and as a family," President Reuven Rivlin and his wife, Nechama, said in a joint Facebook post on the president's official page.

The Rivlins thanked Cohen for all that he had done, noting that Cohen "never once thought to change his clearly Jewish name to win recognition from anyone."

Cohen, "Knew to accompany the state of Israel in the battlefields and in times of growth," stated the Rivlins.

"Leonard Cohen will continue to dance with us until the end of love."

Former Defense Minister Moshe "Bogie" Ya'alon also paid his respects tweeting, "There are so few artists with such emotional, deep voices that have touched and continue to touch so many people as Leonard Cohen."

Cohen died at the age of 82.

"It is with profound sorrow we report that legendary poet, songwriter and artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away," his Facebook page said late Thursday. "We have lost one of music's most revered and prolific visionaries."

It did not give a cause of death, but said there would be a funeral in Los Angeles in coming days.

Cohen is survived by a son and a daughter.
