Hijinks
Hijinks at the U.N.?
Does Obama have a surprise
in store for Israel at the UN?

While the Israeli government tries to resolve the issues concerning the "legality" of the Jewish community of Amona, and by extension, that of dozens of other Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria, looming on the horizon is the potential for serious hijinks at the U.N., brought to us by none other than Barack Hussein Obama.

Up until now, Obama has been constrained from action (or inaction) in the U.N. that could harm Israel, mainly due to the upcoming U.S. presidential elections and solid support for Israel in Congress and the U.S. public. However, after the election, all constraints would be lifted and he would be free to take whatever action he wants. In fact, just recently Obama warned the head of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, not to bring a resolution to the Security Council until after the elections.

So what would Obama do that could harm Israel in the U.N.? There is speculation that he is seriously considering withholding a veto to an anti-Israel Security Council resolution. This resolution would make Resolution 242 irrelevant and thus change the course of decades of U.S. diplomacy in the Middle East. This anti-Israel resolution would most likely call for:
- the recognition of a Palestinian state;
- Israel to withdraw to the dangerous and indefensible 1948 armistice lines;
- the division of Jerusalem;
- the condemnation of Israeli communities throughout Judea and Samaria, eastern Jerusalem and the Jordan Valley;
- "Palestinian refugees" to be allowed into Israel.

That is, it would call for basically everything the Arabs want, including ultimately, the destruction of Israel.

Why would Obama do this? Speculation is that it would be to: 1) help secure his legacy, however, mediocre it actually is, and/or 2) it would be a form of revenge against Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, who has vociferously opposed the Iran deal and to some extent, stood up to pressure from Obama throughout the latter's eight year tenure as president.

Not vetoing an extreme anti-Israel resolution in the Security Council would fly in the face of the position the U.S. has held for decades; one that has called for bilateral negotiations between Israel and the  Arabs.

The outcome of the U.S. presidential election may sway to some degree Obama's decision to act against Israel in the U.N. However, we must be on guard to the dangers to Israel lurking in those "hallowed halls". Now is the time to contact our local, state and federal representatives, reminding them of the mutually beneficial relationship and deep friendship extending decades, between the U.S. and Israel. We cannot allow Obama to have that swinging door hit Israel as he closes it behind him on his way out of the Oval Office.
